It's silly season

Yes, Elf Yourself video 2011 ticked, I've written to Father Christmas, I've made an online advent calendar, and done my bit for the e-commerce stats. It's silly season once again.

Maybe it's because I'm off to Kitten Camp tonight, but this video a friend sent me just made me smile for bringing to life a universal truth - we all know the internet is really just fuelled by cat videos.  Enjoy.

Trivial Treasure

Thanks to a little bit of crowdsourcing from the teams I work with, what started off with me sharing a random but humorous Tumblr I tripped over somehow somewhere, a flurry of random finds from the interweb flooded my way. Given that in the whirlwind my life has been over the last few months the posts have been a little few and far between, I thought I'd share them just for fun, please hang your PC hats by the door first:

Tumblr for men....

Goats on stuff...

Kim Jong looking at things...

Stickers on the Central Line...

Dear Photograph...

A fun variation on the myriad of entertaining Flickr groups around what's in my (man/hand/tool) bag :

What would you take from the burning house...  (very insightful and curious selection of what people value)

And with Father's Day fast approaching:

Dads are the original hipsters...

So with that in mind, this one's for you Dad.   [Here with fabulous flares and my little bro]. You rock :-)

Comedy Gold: Technology - The One Ronnie style

Traditions are the things that make Christmas, random things that over the years have become part of family expected and part and parcel of the season for one reason or another: fighting with my Mum to get to the purple Quality Street sweets first, Terry's Chocolate Oranges (and just where can you buy the plain ones this year??),  my brother and I smuggling that random satsuma Father Christmas always put in our stockings back into the fruit dish, and The Two Ronnies on TV or DVD to chuckle at.   I remember one year my Dad and I laughing 'til our sides hurt over a sketch in a 20 something years of the Two Ronnies show entitled the Plumstead Ladies Male Voice Choir. Scriptwriting genius. Just one raised eyebrow for hours afterwards was enough to set us off all over again. I'm sure a glass of port or two helped but....

Sadly Ronnie Barker is no longer around but I am delighted that Ronnie Corbett is still working and making me laugh with his fabulous One Ronnie show on the BBC.

Thanks to my old colleagues at Hyper for sharing this genius sketch, technology explained, Ronnie style.

Mr Corbett,  you are a legend. There's a certain irony that possibly the best tech sketch I have seen all year comes from someone who has just celebrated their 80th birthday.

And if like me, you believe that there's no such thing as too much comic genius, here's a Plumstead Ladies-esque take on Songs of Praise too. I love, love, love smart observation and great writing.

Happy Christmas. May it be full of fun and laughter.

Laughing my Christmas stockings off

Oh I do love a healthy dose of irreverence, especially from an industry that can excel at navelgazing and self-glorification at times.

Full marks for seasonal cheer to The Quiet Room for their priceless Santa Brand Guidelines document.  Well worth a look at the fine print :-)  (click to enlarge)

Nice mash up of old and new

I'll admit it, I LOVE West Side Story, so you could argue that I was either going to love this mashed-contemporary cut-down version, or hate it for messing with Mr Bernstein's work.  As it happens, I think it's been done rather well, a modern [digital] love story to an edited version of a classic one.

It won't appeal to everyone, but hey, what's the point of having a blog if you can't go off piste once in a while and post something random just 'cos you like it?

Email addresses 2.0 and beyond - Friday Fun

The Oatmeal often has some entertaining graphics and is well worth a dip into once in a while.

This one amused me particularly because I have an email address for all of the categories. I'm taking that as confirmation of my longstanding geek credentials, having started off with my AOL email address in 1996, and added others along the last 14 years.  ;-)

Digital Treasure Ahoy! Utterly mad but fabulous Twitter visualisation mash up

Thanks to my friend Mark, I've just found this wonderful, hilarious, Twitter visualisation experience from some crazily creative dude in Japan. LOVING it.

A musically accompanied parade of people you follow or who follow you and their Tweets! It takes a while to load, and after a while the backing track gets a tad annoying but have a play with either your Twitter handle or a keyword. Digital treasure. Delight!

And there was me only earlier today having a debate with someone over original innovation v creative mashing! Scraping Twitter isn't new, but as Hollywood script writer and storytelling guru Robert McKee once told me, there are only 7 stories in the movies, just a million different ways to tell them. ;-)

Valentines Day looms spawning some seasonal fun

Heineken used to be known as the "beer that refreshes parts other beers can't reach", but whilst these days their strapline seems to have evolved to "made to entertain", this Italian campaign I just found courtesy of my friend Lucia, combines both really nicely: Beer Lip Gloss, positioned as the perfect Valentines gift!

Here's the video (English version)

The website links to Facebook prompting an instant "share this site" message, allowing those engaging with the campaign to share the fun with the minimum of effort. Nice touch, adding easy influential reach.

And the final touch? You can buy the product from the site for 5 euros :-)
