Visualising the Interweb

Just found this nice interactive infographic of the web on the BBC, who have been running a very interesting series called Super Power. Well worth spending some time with.

Click here to go and play with the live version - explore the tabs, there's some interesting results.

From the same series I've just taken this grab, giving you a real time picture of the interweb today.  I wonder whether I'll look back at these numbers in a year's time and laugh at how small they were.

Interesting presentation trivia (stats)

I spent an awful lot of last year writing or presenting Powerpoint, decks adorned with as many pictures as possible, because lots of people remember images more easily than lots of words.  So as a subject frequently on my mind (rightly or wrongly!) I couldn't help but click when I  found the presentation below via one of my blogger buddies (thanks Helge).

Being still full of seasonal goodwill I thought I'd save you the click and embed it here too. It's an interesting deck on facts and stats on presentations uploaded to the fantastic resource that is Slideshare.

Slideshare (if you don't know about it already) is a fascinating realm of interesting presentations on all manner of topics, generously shared by all sorts of people. If you've never explored it, I'd urge you to do so, it's an amazing resource.

It's pretty inevitable that I'll be writing presentations this year too, but I am planning on ringing some changes and having a play with the more dynamic format offered by Prezi.  I was intending to start playing with it over Christmas but somehow found other more diverting pursuits AFK (away from keyboard), exploring the techy heaven that is Silicon Valley.  I'll let you know how I get on.

Blogger celebrates 10th Birthday

Blogger (the Google-owned blog platform) turned 10 last week.

The site announced it has 10 million active users (i.e those who have posted something new over the last month).

The number of 7-day active users has doubled over the last 2 years, & Blogger-powered blogs (like this one) generate 300million unique visits a month.

In an average minute there are 270,000 words written on the platform. Wow!

Facebook users top 300 million

Facebook announced yesterday that they've added another 50 million users since July bringing them up to 300 million globally, and, with the launch of the less resource hungry Facebook Lite last week, that figure can only be set to grow further.

Only another 7 million to add then until the number of Facebook subscribers equals the entire population of the USA.

Zuckerberg also added that they've finally broken even / made it into the black, notably ahead of their forecast of 2010.

I'm a big fan of (unofficial) site Checkfacebook.com for it's fun and interactive interface showing Facebook users by country / % of online population thereof amongst other random and useful stats.
However,  as with so many things on the web, take the numbers as directional not as gospel.

I read an interesting article yesterday about the UK Government's inspirational creative mathematics on illegal downloads. Impressive!

Search stats update

In July 2009 there were 113 billion searches globally says Comscore

Google snaffled 76.7 billion of them (giving them a 67% share of the market)

32% of all searches originated in Europe, with searchers on average looking up 116 things in a month. APAC accounted for 31% and North America just 22%.

I've decided that Bing's changing photos every day is like an advent calendar (the proper ones before it was just an excuse for a daily dose of rubbish chocolate!). It's become a daily habit to just swing by in the morning and check. I've also noticed that I am more likely to use Bing for searches throughout the day if I particularly like the picture that day.
